Inspiring learning environment for critical and engaged citizens
The task
The Hyperion Lyceum, an innovative VWO+ school in Amsterdam, had the ambition to create a school building that reflects the core values of their educational vision: openness, cooperation and social engagement. The challenge was to design an inspiring learning environment that encourages students to develop their academic potential and feel connected to their school environment. ZENBER Architects was commissioned to design an interior that matches this vision, taking into account the wishes of students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders.
“Openness and discovery at the core of the learning environment.”
About this project
The interior design of the Hyperion Lyceum is a translation of the educational vision that focuses on openness and discovery. The mix of open and enclosed spaces supports both individual and group work, while the building invites interaction between students and teachers. ZENBER worked with Ector Hoogstad Architects, who was responsible for the building's architecture.
Flexible and innovative learning environments
The building has innovative science and study labs, an auditorium, studios, music studios and gymnasiums with views of the surroundings. The classrooms are larger than average and offer space for various teaching methods, from practical to theory lessons. This flexibility encourages creativity and a dynamic way of learning. The use of wide staircases as stands, a central slide and multifunctional spaces such as the canteen emphasises the playfulness and functionality of the design.
Welcoming common areas
The canteen is a lively and flexible space where students can have lunch, study or get together for events. The library combines a renaissance look with modern functionality, with wall-high bookshelves and portable ladders that invite you to explore knowledge.
“Flexible and creative spaces for forward-looking education.”

Durable and warm design
Sustainability plays an important role in design. The decision was made to reuse existing furniture, supplemented with custom-made furniture that is both practical and sustainable. The design combines all of this with warm and natural elements, such as wooden accents and generous daylight, which contribute to an inviting atmosphere.
