The task

The Hubertus & Berkhoff Culinary Vocational School, located on the Zuidas in Amsterdam, asked for an interior design that emphasises craft, tradition and hospitality. The challenge was to create an inspiring learning environment that combines both functionality and aesthetics and offers space for education, practical experience and hospitality. The design was supposed to reflect the school's identity as a supplier of top chefs, bakers and hostesses and provide an attractive environment for students, teachers and visitors.

Professional kitchen where chefs in white outfits bake and prepare, with stainless steel workbenches and appliances.

About this project

The new Hubertus & Berkhoff building comprises 6,600 m² spread over three floors, with a central passage connecting the rooms and floors. This passage acts as a meeting place and offers a clear structure for the school. The design of ZENBER Architects focuses on interaction, safety and inspiration, with the passage surrounding a central square. From this passage, students and visitors can see what is happening in the bakeries and kitchens, which makes a direct link between learning and experiencing.

Craftsmanship and hospitality along the façade

In addition to theory rooms, gymnasiums and auditoriums, the school has two restaurants, a grand café with bakery shop and several bakeries and kitchens. These facilities are attractively located along the façade, tempting passers-by to come in and experience the atmosphere and flavors of the school.

Culinary-inspired interior design

The interior has been designed with an eye for detail, with colors and materials inspired by sweet and creamy ingredients such as honey and chocolate. This creates a warm, welcoming and attractive environment that highlights the school's craft and tradition. Visitors can enjoy students' skills in the grand café, bakery shop or restaurants, making the building a showcase of their culinary talents.

Long corridor with wooden panels and glass walls, with the inscription “Création” on a dark grey strip above the passage.
“Honey and chocolate as inspiration for a warm, welcoming school environment.”
