The task

The Cburg College, a small-scale VMBO school on the Zeeburgereiland, offers basic and vocational education to 400 students in the services, commerce and ICT sectors. The task was to create a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment in which students are optimally prepared for professional practice. At the same time, the building had to fulfill a community function by promoting interaction with the neighborhood.

A modernly designed counter with the word “WELCOME” in large letters on the wooden front. Behind the counter, glass walls and coloured elements are visible in the room.
An overview of the school hall with tables and chairs on a colorful floor. The space is light and spacious, with yellow and blue tones and large windows. There are “COMMUNITY” and “CONNECT” signs above the stairs.
The open hall with wooden stands on the right, yellow and blue poufs spread across the floor, and a hanging sign with “ECONOMY”. People sit and walk through space.
“The central hall: the beating heart of learning and meeting.”
A colorful hall with wooden steps on the right, yellow and blue poufs spread across the floor, and a hanging sign with the text “ECONOMY”.
A large, open school space with primary color seats and a hanging frame with words like “MEDIA” and “ECONOMY”. The walls are colourful in green, blue and yellow.
A brightly decorated hall with a wooden “WELCOME” desk and glass panels. Behind the counter, you can see colorful poufs, stairs, and a green wall.

About this project

The Cburg College building has a large central hall that spans three floors and acts as the beating heart of the school. This multifunctional space offers space for meeting, learning, lunch, relaxing and presentations. Around the central hall there are learning plazas, classrooms, the canteen, meeting rooms, a team lounge and professional squares. The use of color provides recognition and orientation, making it easy for students and teachers to move around the school.

Realistic professional experience with “Shop in Shop”

An innovative aspect of the design is the 'shop in shop' concept, specially developed by ZENBER Architects. This concept introduces professional environments within the school, giving students a realistic professional experience and preparing them for their future in the field. The professional squares offer a functional and inspiring learning environment, both for students and customers in the neighborhood.

Transparency and community engagement

The transparent design of the plinth makes it possible to make the activities in the school visible to the neighborhood. This supports the community function of the Cburg College, where local residents are invited to visit the school and get involved in students' activities and achievements.
