The task

Koninklijke Kentalis, an organization with more than two centuries of experience in care and education for people with hearing and communication disabilities, wanted to provide the ICT department with a modern working environment that supports the principles of The New Way of Working. At the same time, the design had to do justice to the historical and monumental value of the main building in Sint-Michielsgestel, an architectural heritage from 1908.

A modern office structure with a large white unit with a dark brown top. The design has rounded edges and modern lighting.
An open office space with rows of white desks, each equipped with dual computer screens. On the right are blue acoustic work cabins.
A hall with black comfortable sofas in acoustic cabins on the left. The space has a modern design with blue and white walls.
“Modern functionality in a monumental setting.”

About this project

The new work environment is located in the Joseph Room, a historic space on the first floor of the main building. This hall, with its impressive roof structure, has been transformed into a contemporary workplace. ZENBER Architects has designed three free-standing volumes that serve as meeting and work spaces. These volumes are strategically placed to maintain the openness of the space and create a people-centered work environment.

Strategic design and acoustic comfort

Acoustics was an important focus in design, appropriate for an organization that focuses on communication restrictions. The acoustic edges of the volumes provide a pleasant sound experience and contribute to a visually dynamic environment. Despite the modern additions, the monumental appearance of the Joseph Hall remains intact, creating a balance between historical heritage and modern functionality.

The New Way of Working in a Unique Setting

The result is a work environment where employees benefit from a functional, comfortable workplace that is fully in line with the principles of The New Way of Working. At the same time, the design maintains the unique identity of Royal Kentalis and respects the building's rich history.

A spacious office environment with a tall blue wall in the middle. There are acoustic cabins on the right, while desks with computer screens are set up on the left.
“Acoustic comfort and historic charm in harmony.”
