The task

In 2020, Huawei, the world's largest provider of telecommunications networks, merged its offices in Amsterdam South-East and Voorburg into a new headquarters in Rijswijk. The assignment was to create an inspiring work environment that combines both high-tech and humanity. The design needed to find a balance between Dutch and Chinese elements to depict Huawei's globality. In addition, the building had to offer functional spaces for collaboration, encounters and relaxation, with a strong focus on greenery and sustainability.

A reception with a curved wooden counter and lighting at the bottom. Plants hang from the ceiling. An employee writes something down behind the counter.
An informal sitting area with grey sofas and round tables under a wooden ceiling. A TV hangs on the wall, and meeting rooms are visible in the background.
A work area with an oval table and red chairs, under a hanging plant rack. Benches with tables are visible in the background.
“The atrium connects people and technology.”
A wooden stand with built-in lights and coloured round cushions, next to a staircase with a metal railing. Large windows let in lots of light.
A modern meeting room with a white table, blue wheeled chairs and acoustic panels on the ceiling. There are white bell booths in the background.
A round bar with a wooden ceiling and red bar stools around it. Hanging lights create a warm atmosphere in the open office space.

About this project

Huawei's new head office in Rijswijk is located in a centrally located building on the Laan van Vredenoord, easily accessible by car and public transport. The building consists of four floors with two wings, connected by an inviting atrium with steps and playful platforms. The top floor has a roof terrace with a panoramic view.

Entrance and atrium

The entrance area is an impressive entry and reflects Huawei's high-tech and human side. An organic, high-tech counter leads visitors to the connecting atrium, where trees, greenery, a teapoint and a large wooden grandstand staircase fill the space. The atrium is a place for meetings and interaction, with a large LED screen that shows technology and trends.

Meeting & training center

One of the wings houses the meeting center, which offers facilities for both internal and external meetings. A variety of meeting and training rooms have been organized around a central lobby with pantry and service desk.

“Capsules and bamboo create warmth.”

Office floors

The office floors on the 1st to 3rd floors are vertically connected via the atrium, with wooden platforms that provide lounge and work spaces amidst greenery. The workplaces along the facades offer a peaceful atmosphere with warm shades of grey. The middle area contains support functions such as huddlespaces, concentration workstations, phone pods and Skype rooms, housed in capsule-shaped structures. These capsules, finished with bamboo and accent colors per floor (yellow, green and blue), bring a playful and warm element to the design.

Restaurant and roof terrace

The top floor houses a restaurant with a large roof terrace. Live cooking offers both Chinese and European dishes, and a centrally located coffee bar creates a meeting place. Various seating options, hanging gardens and bamboo wood elements contribute to a warm atmosphere. The layout is flexible, so that the restaurant can also be used for large meetings.
