The task

Hotel School The Hague expanded its branches with a second location at Staalmeesterslaan 410 in Amsterdam, a former ABN AMRO office designed by architect Zandstra in the 1970s. The challenge was to transform this building into a contemporary educational institution, where studying, working and living come together. The interior had to have an open, functional and sustainable appearance that matches the Hotel School's core values.

A smiling woman in a white chef uniform walks down a corridor with beige and brown seats lining the wall.
A canteen with white and black benches and tables. In the background, people sit at tables, next to a room with a buffet.
A modern bar with a bartender serving a drink. The bar has glass walls with a view of wine bottles and a background full of drinks bottles.
“Learning, living and hospitality under one roof.”
A lecture hall with rows of chairs in various colors such as beige, brown and gray. The walls have a dark pattern.
A building with a concrete façade and rectangular windows. At the glass entrance, people are talking or going in.
A modern lunch area with black tables and white chairs. In the background is a bar where people are talking and ordering.

About this project

The new campus of the Hotel School The Hague offers various functions under one roof: education, hospitality, hospitality and offices. This multifunctional concept includes classrooms, study rooms, a media library, an auditorium, teachers' offices, two restaurants (Le Debut and La Place), guest rooms and Skotel apartments for first-year students. These functions have been given their own identity, spread over the different floors.

Strategic layout: dynamic and structured

The spaces are designed with a clear structure thanks to free-standing volumes such as kitchens, service counters and classrooms, which are strategically placed in the floor plan. These volumes are designed as closed boxes with unique finishes in material and color, making for a modern and dynamic interior.

Tough, sustainable and inviting

The design combines a contemporary, rugged look with functionality and durability. The interior matches the robust and powerful character of the original building and at the same time offers an open and inviting atmosphere.

A bright work area with a long white table and wooden chairs. In the background, people are working on computers near big windows.
“Robust and inviting in perfect balance.”
