Dynamic base camp for collaboration and meetings
The task
The headquarters of the International Red Cross, located in the De Groene Schenk office area in The Hague, needed to be transformed into a dynamic work environment that emphasizes cooperation, encounters and the international character of the organization. The assignment for ZENBER Architects was to create a design that reflects the identity of the Red Cross and is in line with their mission as the largest emergency relief organization in the world.
“Base camps encourage encounters and collaboration.”
About this project
The new Red Cross headquarters is designed with a dynamic and international character, inspired by the hands-on mentalities and base camps that are used for relief efforts around the world. The building, consisting of five floors, offers a green and open work environment where employees and visitors are central.
Base camp as a dynamic heart
A large “base camp” has been created on each floor that acts as the central center. Here are pantries with good coffee, multifunctional reading and work tables and seats covered with felt frames. There are transparent meeting rooms, meeting rooms and concentration workplaces around the open base camp. This setup promotes visibility, encounters and collaboration between employees from different departments.
On the ground floor, visitors are warmly welcomed at a central reception desk. There is also a base camp here, followed by a work café that offers a view of the green park strip and a large meeting center.
Workplace diversity
The open office floors facilitate easy contact between departments and are equipped with various workplaces, including Skype niches and call cells. These are frequently used for international conversations with employees and other agencies. By using carpets, ceilings with a high acoustic value and acoustic screens between workplaces, the acoustics are excellent, which is essential for this work environment.
“The design reflects the Red Cross's global mission.”

Identity and international character
The identity of the Red Cross is evident in the interior design. During workshops with Red Cross employees, the identity and look & feel of the organization was translated into the interior. Large wall-length photography of international relief efforts highlights the mission of the Red Cross. The use of sustainable materials and color combinations strengthens the connection with the hands-on mentality and the international character of the organization.
