Sticky campus with a vibrant heart
The task
The Haarlem location of Inholland University of Applied Sciences houses various domains and courses spread across the campus building, totalling 34,000 m² GFA. Inholland University of Applied Sciences asked ZENBER Architects to design a central meeting place in the entrance hall.
The new entrance zone has space for reception, meetings, events and restorative facilities. Everyone works and learns throughout the campus, so that teaching and work spaces blend together and are multifunctional and flexible. Learning, developing and creating together is very important on the sticky campus.
“Green and plants as a connection between outside and inside.”
About this project
Sustainability and vitality are at the heart of Inholland and are reflected in interior design. Plants and green elements, such as planters and moss walls, improve acoustics and emphasize sight lines. Hanging gardens strengthen the connection between inside and outside.
Reuse and efficiency in design and furnishing
When choosing furniture, we focused on reuse and efficient use of space. The coffee bar fits exactly where the old reception desk was located, so that adjustments to the floor and installations were minimal. The design makes optimal use of materials, such as standard sheet sizes, to reduce cutting waste.
Sustainable materials with a circular future
Sustainability is also important in the choice of materials. For example, the acoustic padding behind the wooden slats is made from recycled jeans. The chairs in the event zone, designed by Ineke Hans, are made of recycled nylon, old office chair components, fishing nets, carpet and industrial waste. In addition, they are fully recyclable.
“Coco café is the heart of Inholland.”
Highlights
Coco café as a center
The bright atrium connects all parts of the building and houses the central coffee bar “Cococafe” with seating all around. The reception is located near one of the elevator cores, while the other offers a bamboo study stage for meetings and collaboration.
Fireplace as focal point
The old canteen has been transformed into a modern work café with lunch and lounge areas around a fireplace, ideal for meeting, studying and relaxing. The suspended ceiling has been replaced by recycled acoustic paint for more height and an industrial look. New LED lighting provides an attractive balance between warm light and practical work light.
