Much more space for passengers in Lounge 1

Schiphol opens new part

After a major renovation, Schiphol has opened a new part of Lounge 1. In doing so, the airport is adding 5,000 additional square meters of space for passengers flying within Europe. The extra space is an important milestone in the improvement of the airport. It sets the standard for the new Schiphol with a spacious, modern look and better passenger experience. In the coming months, Lounge 1 will continue to work hard on new facilities, such as restaurants and shops. The innovation is part of the investment plans to improve the quality at the airport.

In Lounge 1, more than 20,000 square metres of passenger area will be renewed and made future-proof again. The technical rooms and installations are also being addressed. With the added 5,000 square meters, Lounge 1 is now significantly larger, with a more spacious look. With a new walking route, the extra space ensures a better flow of passengers traveling to European destinations. The new square offers more passenger seats and space for new facilities. For example, there will be several new restaurants and shops, which will be worked on by ESAP (a construction combination between Equans and SPIE Netherlands) in the coming months.

“The completed square is a new part of Schiphol to be proud of and an important step in the renewal of the airport. It is the transformation of our oldest airport area into a modern, bright space, where we have also replaced fundamental parts. Literally and figuratively, a strong piece of work. This new area sets a new standard for how we want to welcome passengers: with more space, comfort and contemporary amenities. It is one of our efforts to make the space at Schiphol more in line with the number of passengers. We will continue to work hard to make Schiphol future-proof, with quality and experience at the core. '

- Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Schiphol Infrastructure

Efficient use of scarce space

The extra space was created by transforming a car park and parts of four existing buildings into a new passenger area. By connecting the building components, a spacious square with lots of natural light was created. Three large trees, measuring four to six meters, provide a natural, relaxing atmosphere. More sustainable materials such as bamboo wall panels were chosen for the interior and cut grass was incorporated into the seating furniture at Schiphol.
